The Vanguard Against Drug Abuse (VGADA) has called for renewed commitment to tackling substance abuse through innovative, evidence-based strategies as the world commemorates the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In a message marking the global observance on Friday, the organisation joined stakeholders worldwide in commemorating the day under the theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”
VGADA said this year’s theme highlights the evolving nature of the global drug problem and underscores the need for faster, more effective responses focused on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, recovery and community support.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to building drug-free communities through sustained advocacy, public awareness campaigns, early prevention initiatives, mental health promotion, stakeholder collaboration, and support for individuals and families affected by substance use.
According to VGADA, lasting solutions to drug abuse must be anchored on compassion, collaboration and access to quality care rather than stigma and discrimination.
The group urged governments, civil society organisations, healthcare professionals, communities and individuals to work together in addressing the growing challenges posed by illicit drug use and trafficking.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to strengthen global action and cooperation towards a world free of drug abuse.
