Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a Kogi State indigene, identified as Moferewa Maiye, for allegedly impersonating a secret police officer to extort motorists and commuters in Abuja.
Maiye, who hails from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was apprehended on Wednesday night around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, Federal Capital Territory.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect was wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying a fake pistol.
Security sources disclosed that the operation followed intelligence reports regarding an individual posing as a security operative to harass members of the public and demand money along the corridor.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly told investigators that the uniform and operational gear belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye, whom he claimed was a former DSS personnel.
Investigators are currently probing the duration and scope of the suspect’s alleged extortion activities, as well as the exact source of the tactical uniform and associated items found in his possession.
The DSS has maintained its warning against the unauthorized possession or deployment of its uniforms, insignia, and official accoutrements by non-personnel.
