In the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Idris Adeiza, a son of a bricklayer from Kogi State scored 323. But he has no hope of continuing his education for lack of funds.
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s UTME took place between Friday, April 19 to Monday, April 29, 2024 across the country. Africa with registration number 202441078764HF recorded an aggregate score of 323, which spreads across English Language 63, Mathematics 86, Physics 86 and Chemistry 88.
Adeiza’s 323 score makes him the second highest in Kogi State, Alex Onyia, the chief executive officer at Educare, a leading software firm, said on his X handle @winexviv.
The youngster father, a bricklayer and his mother a trader, are unable to fund his tertiary education and Adeiza was unlikely to continue his education despite getting the second highest score in Kogi State until Onyia stepped in.
He is already considering learning a vocation like his father.
“I spoke with him few minutes ago and have committed to supporting his education journey through the university,” Onyia said.
“He wants to study Chemical Engineering in the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna) and I pray he succeeds well. He is a star and the world will celebrate him someday.”
Many Nigerians have applauded Onyia for his kind gesture, while chiding the Kogi State government for not catering for its citizens.
ßocatiz, @ocatiz on X wrote, “From the same state the government looted N80 billion for his child and posted a video of himself in a new Benz.
Similarly, Enitan on his official X handle @EnitanOyekanm said, “Well done, yet his governor paid over $906k for his own children’s education rather than institute a robust scholarship scheme for the brainy ones from his state.”
Meanwhile Onyia has announced that his team will now focus on engaging youngsters on vocational training with the JAMB done and dusted.
“Now that JAMB is over, we developed a vocational training plan for my village youngsters to enable them acquire quality skills before starting school.
“One of them is Songhai Agricultural training program which the first batch has started. They will be trained in crop production, animal husbandry, food production, processing and go to market,” he said.
