The Kogi State chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), has decried the poor remuneration received by Nigerian pharmacists.
The association has said that the economic hardship in the country, has made it difficult for pharmacists to survive in the country.
Dr Lawal Mohammed, the Kogi State Chairman of the PSN, made this revelation, Saturday while addressing the theme “Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world” during the 2022 World Pharmacists Day with .
Mohammed lamented the mass exit of pharmacists from the country.
He said pharmacists travel out of the country in search of greener pastures because of poor welfare, affirming that this has intensified the chance of quackery in the profession.
He warned that if something important and urgent step is not taken by the government at all levels, things will continue to go out of hand for the health sector of the country.
“Despite our impact in the health sector, we are not being appreciated. Our take home pay is nothing to write hope about looking at the economic hardship. Many of our colleagues are jetting out of Nigeria to look for greener.
“Who would want to stay in a place that you are not being appreciated for putting in your best to save lives? We can’t continue like this. We are using this medium to call on the government to look into the welfare of pharmacists across the Country. This will no doubt motivate us to keep putting in our best in the health profession” he added.
Mohammed said pharmacists also battle the problems of understaffing and poor environment for professional practice.
The 25th of September of every year has been set aside for the celebration of World Pharmacist Day, which provides an avenue for the promotion of the pharmacy profession.
