A Facebook user identified as Onono Onimisi has written a public letter to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo over what she detailed as unjust arrest and detention of her brother, Farouk Onimisi Ozigi.
Ms Onimisi who posted on Facebook, indicted the Accountant General of the state, Hajia Habibat Oyiza Onumoko as ordering the arrest.
She noted her brother was arrested over information that he was planning to lead a protest against the government.
She insisted if that were the basis, it was her brother’s lawful and constitutional right to challenge the actions of the government.
“It is important to note that Farouk is widely regarded as an avid writer, a staunch critic, and one who is often brutally honest in expressing his views. While some may disagree with his style of criticism, disagreement alone should never become grounds for intimidation or arrest.
“Your Excellency, this is said to be one among several instances where the Accountant General has used the influence of her office to order the arrest of individuals who criticize the government. If true, this raises serious concerns, because under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), unlawful detention and arbitrary arrest are prohibited.
“It is further stated that the reason given for Farouk’s arrest was that he intended to lead a protest against the government. If that is indeed the basis, then certain questions naturally arise: Has any protest actually taken place? Has Farouk mobilized people unlawfully? Is there credible evidence that public peace was under threat?
“These are legitimate questions, because the rule of law is clear: citizens have the right to challenge government actions through lawful means, including peaceful protest. Government, in turn, must respond through law not intimidation, oppression, or abuse of power.,” she said.
Ms Onimisi while calling for the unconditional release of her brother, reminded the Governor that unjust arrests by public officials breed resentment and damage government’s image.
“With all due respect, I humbly appeal that Farouk be released and that due legal process be followed, unless there are lawful reasons unknown to the public.
“I also use this medium to call on former governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello Farouk has consistently shown loyalty and admiration toward you over the years. I believe you would not remain silent if one of your staunch supporters is being unlawfully detained,” she wrote.
