The State House of Assembly has called for the completion of the abandoned Oguma/Sheria bridge. This followed a motion moved by the member representing Bassa constituency, Rayi Daniya on a matter of urgent public importance during plenary.
He said the bridge connects five wards namely Akuba one, Akakana/Ayede, Ozongulo, Ikende and Ozugbe.
According to him, the communities have now been cut off as the collapsed bridge was a palliative measure to ameliorate the sufferings of the residents.
Daniya explained that it took the quick intervention of rescuers to save the life of a motorcyclist, who was drowning when the Oguma/Sheria Wooden Bridge collapsed and called for urgent attention by the government to save the life of his constituents.
He said the current situation of the bridge has brought untold hardship on the people as Sheria market, which is one of the largest markets in Kogi East, is no longer accessible.
Daniya called on the state government to compel the contractor handling the bridge to return to site immediately as the project was awarded five years ago.
He also urged the house to direct the house committee on works to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the bridge.
Contributing to the motion, the deputy chief whip, Paul Enema, who described the situation as unfortunate, appealed to the state government to urgently provide palliative to reduce the sufferings of the people.
The speaker, Prince Matthew Kolawole sympathised with the people of Bassa local government on the incident, saying the resolution of the house will be forwarded to government for quick action.
Recall that the Sheria/Oguma collapsed last Saturday due to heavy rains but no life was lost.
