By the schedule of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, September 28th, 2022 opens the curtains for political parties and their candidates to go into the campaign field to garner supports ahead of the election.
Thus, candidates now reserve the right to hold public campaigns and display their materials in all forms, except for states like Kogi where they must commit financially to the state government before erecting billboards, posters and other forms of signage.
According to the recently passed Kogi State’s Signage Agency Establishment Law, prices have been earmarked for candidates for various political positions, which they have to pay before hoisting billboards and posters in the state.

– Senate Candidates – N2m
– House of Representatives – N1m
Recall that the state House of Assembly noted that the law was necessary to regulate outdoor display of signage and advertisement in the state, and aimed at curbing the indiscriminate pasting of posters on side walks, walls, bridges and public buildings in the state.
Consequently, the law provides for the establishment of a signage agency saddled with regulatory functions.
This means that until permits are issued no politician, political party or organisation can erect any billboard or paste a poster at any designated place in the state.
Political Parties Reject State Charges For Campaign Signage
Meanwhile, political parties in the country have rejected levies imposed by state governments for campaign bills boards, stating that it will increase their campaign spending.
To this end, the political parties have called on the state governments to review their levies.
Speaking to newsmen, the national organising secretary, who is also the acting publicity secretary of the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), the umbrella body of all the political parties in the country, Mr Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, said they are concerned over the several levies in the states which will increase their campaign spending.
“We are not happy with the levies in the states. We reject it because it will increase campaign spending. This is a time Nigerians are deemphasizing spending excessive money and we are calling on the states to review their actions because it will increase campaign spending,” Adekaiyaoja said.
