A middle-aged man identified as Alfa Olukuluku Kabiru on Wednesday got electrocuted while trying to vandalise electricity transformer in Lokoja, Kogi state capital.

The incident occurred at Paparanda Square, Lokoja, around 2 a.m when Kabiru tried to steal transformer cable belonging to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

He got electrocuted when electricity supply was restored to the equipment before he could finish his criminal operation.

Eyewitness account said Kabiru was cutting the transformer cable and suddenly, electricity supply was restored to the area.

It was confirmed that Kabiru was an indigene of Lokoja, from Angwan-Masara street.

Residents and passerby who gathered at the scene, were unanimous in condemnation of transformer vandals who have been inflicting pains and hardship on poor people in the state in the last two years.

In 2022, no less than 55 electricity transformers were vandalized and looted within Lokoja metropolis alone. Residents in affected areas had to endure darkness for months before they could raise a minimum of N800,000 each to fix these transformers.

If Kabiru had made away with the cable, the whole area would have been plunged into darkness for months.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the victim is yet to be removed as at the time of filing this report.
