2026 Ovia Osese Festival to Begin April 12th in Kogi

The President of the Ogori Descendant Union (ODU), Dr. Gabriel Aiso, has reeled out activities lined up for the 2026 Ovia Osese Festival scheduled to commence on April 12th, calling on the Kogi state government to take advantage of the enormous cultural and economic potential of the festival.

Dr. Aiso made the call on Monday in Lokoja while addressing journalists on details of the annual festival held in Ogori community, Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, if the Ovia Osese Festival is properly packaged and supported by the state government, it could become a major tourism attraction capable of generating substantial income and placing Kogi State on the global cultural tourism map.

He noted that the festival, which is the only cultural festival in Kogi state recognized by UNESCO, possesses immense potential that could benefit both the government and the people if effectively managed.

Dr. Aiso explained that proper organization and government backing would transform the festival into a major revenue-generating venture for the state.

“I believe the state government should take advantage of the cultural festival. Some years back, MTN sponsored the festival and carried out an analysis in terms of revenue flow.

“It was discovered that what was generated during the festival was three times more than the revenue realized from the Argungu fishing festival.

“If the festival is properly managed and supported by both the state and local government authorities, it will become more beneficial to the state and the people,” he said.

Dr. Aiso disclosed that the 2026 edition of the festival will hold from April 12 to April 18, 2026, with the grand finale scheduled for April 18.

He added that organizers are expecting wide participation from dignitaries, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.

Speaking further, the ODU president described Ovia Osese as a cherished cultural heritage that reflects the identity, values and history of the Ogori people.

He said the theme for the 2026 edition is focused on showcasing the authentic tradition and identity of the Ogori people, a concept deeply rooted in the community’s cultural heritage and pride.

“Ovia Osese is a cultural festival observed annually by the people of Ogori Kingdom. This year’s theme touches my heart because it speaks directly to our identity, our heritage and where we come from,” he added.

On funding, he explained that the planning committee known as the Ogori Culture Renaissance Committee proposed a budget of ₦100 million for the 2026 festival.

According to him, 40 per cent of the budget will be used directly for the Ovia Osese festival, while the remaining 60 per cent will be invested in community development projects aimed at improving the welfare of the people of Ogori Kingdom.

Dr. Aiso emphasized that beyond its colourful displays of culture and tradition, the Ovia Osese festival also serves as a platform for promoting social values, particularly the recognition and empowerment of the girl child in Ogori society.
