As the rainy season gradually sets in, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted heavy rainfall in most parts of the north-central states and Cross River State in the next three days.
In its latest weather forecast released on Wednesday, NiMet said in the next three days (Wednesday-Friday) heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Cross River, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger and the FCT.
Also, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Benue, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, and Taraba states within the same forecast periods.
The forecast also shows there are chances of light rainfall over most places in the north.
Thus, “as a result of the expected moderate to heavy rainfall in the next three days, there are chances of flash flooding of roads and low-lying settlements; disruption of traffic due to flooded or closed roads, reduction in visibility, likely damage to mud houses and possible disruption in flight operations.
“The rains should be accompanied by strong winds, especially over the northern states, hence displacement and falling of weak buildings and makeshift structures are likely,” NiMet warned.
NiMet advised the public to exercise restraint and avoid low-level areas and fast-flowing runoff waters, adding that “emergency agencies are to be prepared and keep monitoring.”
The public is advised to be prepared for these events to avoid damages from rain-related hazards, NiMet indicated.
