The football community in Nasarawa State is in mourning following the sudden death of Habibu Aliyu Ozeze, a former Kogi United player and captain of Heartland FC of Shabu.
Habibu collapsed during a seven-a-side Ramadan football match in Shabu, a suburb of Lafia, while attempting to deliver a pass.
According to eyewitnesses, he slumped without any contact from opponents as his team got a free kick.
Efforts to save him proved futile as he passed away on the way to the hospital.
Confirming the death of the footballer to Daily Trust, the coach of the seven-a-side team, Suleiman Ibrahim, said “The deceased’s side got a free kick against the opponent.”
“Habibu, while stepping backwards to kick the ball, without any contact, slumped. He was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead before arrival.
A dedicated and disciplined player, Habibu had featured for several clubs, including Kogi United in the Nigeria National League (NNL).
His passing is a significant loss to grassroots and professional football in the state, with teammates, fans, and stakeholders paying tribute to his leadership and commitment.
He has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
