Nineteen political parties in Kogi State have signed a peace accord pledging to ensure a peaceful electoral environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The agreement was sealed during a stakeholders’ engagement between political party representatives and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the Kogi State Police Command Headquarters in Lokoja on Tuesday.
Under the peace pact, participating political parties—including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Action Alliance (AA), and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)—committed to conducting issue-based campaigns centered on policies, manifestos, and development.
The signatories formally rejected electoral violence, hate speech, ethnic and religious profiling, and the deployment or mobilization of thugs to disrupt political activities. They also pledged to respect the statutory functions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies throughout the electoral cycle.
Furthermore, the parties agreed to refrain from spreading false information or inflammatory statements, respect the rights of competing candidates to campaign freely, and ensure that eligible voters exercise their franchise without intimidation or coercion.
Regarding post-election conduct, the political actors committed to accepting the lawful declaration of results and seeking redress exclusively through constitutional and legal channels rather than self-help or reprisal attacks.
The signing ceremony was monitored by officials of the Kogi State Police Command, INEC, security agencies, election observer groups, civil society organizations, and religious leaders.
