Security operatives in Kogi State have arrested 14 suspected illegal miners during two separate joint enforcement operations across the state.
Eight of the suspects were apprehended last week, while an additional six were taken into custody on Monday.
Parading the suspects before newsmen in Lokoja, the State Security Adviser, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), stated that the arrests form part of a broader security crackdown on illicit mining operations and related crimes in the state.
Omodara confirmed that the initial eight suspects are currently being prosecuted by the Kogi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
“Illegal mining is a major catalyst for insecurity in our communities,” Omodara stated. He warned motor park administrators against transporting illicit materials, adding, “Any vehicle found conveying contraband items will be impounded.”
The Security Adviser also issued a stern warning to traditional rulers against harboring illegal miners, cautioning that any monarch found complicit would face severe government sanctions. He commended officers of the 12 Brigade for their role in the joint operation.
Also speaking, the Kogi State Commandant of the NSCDC, Olumide Aletan, assured that the corps would complete thorough investigations into the newly arrested suspects prior to initiating legal proceedings.
“Operatives will carry out thorough investigations on the newly arrested suspects before prosecution in accordance with the law,” Aletan said.
