The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kogi State Chapter, has raised concerns over indiscriminate refuse dumping and slow waste evacuation across the Lokoja metropolis and other parts of the state.
The association stated that the current unsanitary conditions pose health and environmental risks, noting that these issues contributed to reports ranking Kogi State among the dirtiest states in the country.
In a communiqué issued after its congress and signed by the State Chairperson, Comrade Stella Edoka, NAWOJ urged the state government and environmental agencies to increase waste collection, enforce sanitation laws, and sustain public enlightenment campaigns on waste disposal.
Comrade Edoka also highlighted the persistent scarcity of potable water within the Lokoja metropolis, describing the situation as a challenge affecting the health, welfare, and daily routines of residents.
She appealed to the Kogi State Government to deploy a permanent solution to guarantee access to clean, safe, and reliable water for the populace.
Despite the environmental complaints, the association commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his proactive approach to strengthening the security of lives and property, noting that these efforts have sustained peace and supported socio-economic development.
However, Comrade Edoka directed the attention of the state government and security agencies to a rising influx of unidentified individuals entering Kogi State at night.
She called for enhanced surveillance and intelligence gathering to ensure these movements do not compromise the state’s security.
NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to reporting on governance, public health, environmental sustainability, and security, urging stakeholders to collaborate to resolve these urban challenges.
