The Kogi State Police Command said it has deployed a team to hunt fleeing suspects who attacked the Area Command in Okene on Sunday night.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP William Aya, in a statement on Monday, said though security agents repelled the attack, the CP found it necessary to deploy additional operatives to arrest the suspects.
The statement read in part, “On February 6, 2022, around 10pm, some armed hoodlums attacked the Okene Area Command Headquarters with sporadic gunshots and explosives, chanting ‘Allahu Akhbar.’ The officers on duty gallantly repelled the hoodlums and shot dead one of them, which forced them to flee before the arrival of backup teams from neighbouring divisions.
“The Commissioner of Police has deployed a re-enforcement team in the area with a view to tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to book.”
ebirareporters.com had reported that the gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked the Okene Area Command of the Nigerian Police Force at Checkpoint, in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State the late hours of Sunday.
Residents around the Okene metropolis who were thrown into fear, reported explosions and multiple gunshots that lasted for about an hour.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, however confirmed that armed men numbering over 30 were overpowered by superior fire power of security operatives.
Fanwo also disclosed that one of the attackers was shot dead while others escaped with gunshot wound.
