Kogi Govt Pursues Justice for 15 Year-old Girl Sexually Abused by Family Members

The Kogi State Government has responded to the calls for justice for 15 Year-old Idowu Anave, who was found homeless on the streets of Lokoja by a good samaritan.

In the video which made it to major blogs in the state, the girl gave account of the inhumane treatments she was subjected to by her parents and relatives.

Anave disclosed she only met her mother when she became 14 year-old, but her mother who is also resident in Lokoja, sent her out for stealing things.

She also said her father whom she stayed with, traveled and gave his Lokoja house out for rent, leaving her in the care of her paternal aunt in Obajana.

She accused her aunt whom she identified as Sunday Opemi, of giving her out to two different men to sleep with her for money.

“She gives me to Alhajis, who are our neighbours to sleep with me and collects money from them after. Sometimes, N1500, or N500,” she said.

More shockingly, when asked if she reported to her father, she also accused her father and uncle of sexually abusing her.

Reacting to the calls, the state Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Momoh said the appropriate authorities have commenced investigation into the matter.

“We wish to inform the general public that the matter has been duly reported to the appropriate authorities, and investigations are currently ongoing. The child is in safe custody, receiving the necessary care and support, while due process is being followed.

“In accordance with the Child Rights Law of Kogi State (2009) and the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, we respectfully urge the public and media outlets to refrain from sharing unblurred images, videos, or any identifying information of the minor. Doing so may expose her to further trauma, lead to stigmatisation, and hinder her reintegration into society.

“The Ministry reiterates its commitment to ensuring justice, healing, and protection for all children and survivors of abuse across the State.

“We also assure the public that this case, like others, is receiving the full attention it deserves.
