A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of Human Rights Africa has lauded Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for forgiving detractors including Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Akpabio recently withdrew a defamation suit against Natasha while also announcing that he has forgiven all his critics.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Friday, the rights groups coalition described the Senate President’s action as an exemplary display of maturity, tolerance and magnanimity.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by chairman of the coalition, Dr. Ahmed Ilya, the rights groups said Akpabio’s gesture represents a rare act of statesmanship that underscores the values of forgiveness, reconciliation, and responsible leadership.
Akpabio’s decision to rise above personal insults in the interest of peace and national cohesion reflects a deep commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law, the coalition said.
According to the coalition, while public office holders are often subjected to intense scrutiny and criticism, responding with restraint and forgiveness as demonstrated by Akpabio helps to ease political tensions and encourages constructive engagement within the democratic space.
“At a time when the nation is grappling with political polarisation and social divisions, the Senate President’s action serves as a timely reminder of the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and unity in addressing national challenges,” the statement read.
The rights coalition urged political leaders, civil society actors, and citizens to emulate the gesture by prioritising peaceful coexistence, truth, and accountability over hostility and misinformation.
Human Rights Africa reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic governance, civic responsibility, and national unity, while encouraging leaders to continue to act with humility, fairness, and respect for democratic principles.
