The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the central senatorial district of Kogi State has fused its structures with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the ruling party’s senatorial candidate, Engr. Abubakar Ohere in the 2023 general elections.
The party members on Monday disclosed this after a closed door meeting with Ohere in Lokoja, the state capital.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Zonal Chairman of the SDP, Mr. Zubair Ibrahim noted that they have surrendered the party’s structure for the use of Governor Yahaya Bello.
The SDP vowed to use its network and structures as it did in 2019 to work for the APC, insisting that they were behind the huge success of the SDP in the area during the last general elections in 2019.
The SDP members promised to generate the same votes it garnered for the SDP in 2019 for the APC, pointing out that its structure is still intact as members have refused to move with Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
The SDP appreciated Gov. Bello for his efforts in the infrastructural and human capital development as well as pop the contributions of Engr Ohere to the development of the area.
The SDP said with all Gov. Bello has done in Kogi Central and the capacity shown by Engr Ohere, the Party has no choice but to surrender its structures to Gov. Bello and work for all the APC candidates in Kogi Central.
The Zonal Chairman noted that the parlous condition of the state under the PDP government was the reason for the party to pitch a tent with APC vowing not to have any dealings with PDP and her senatorial candidate.
“if the party cannot make progress, a forward movement that would help the people of the Central, it would be better to maintain the stand with the APC rather than to go back to the vomit of the PDP.
“The Party has unanimously endorsed, accommodate, and embraced Gov. Bello and all the APC candidates in the forthcoming February General Elections in Kogi Central” Ibrahim quipped.
The SDP delegation that was in attendance to pass a confidence vote on Gov. Bello as well as embrace the APC candidates in the Central included the Zonal Chairman, all the Local Government Chairmen, twelve Chairman of Chairmen, twenty-two Women Leaders and twenty-three Elders of the party.
Reacting to the development, Engr. Abubakar Ohere described the decision of the SDP stakeholders as a bumper harvest for the APC.
“It’s an honor welcoming the structure of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi Central into the fold of All Progressive Congress (APC) under the sterling leadership of our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello .
“I consider this yet another bumper harvest for our great party, APC. As a party that believes in the strength of the people, we keep our gates opened for influx of people of great minds and positive ideas who are determined to join us to lubricate the system and galvanize support towards attainment of overwhelming victory come 2023 general elections.
“The leadership of the defunct SDP in Kogi Central is to carry the message of hope, full sense of belonging and reassurance to their teeming members across the 5 LGAs of our Senatorial District,” he said.
