The Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo led government of Kogi State has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the establishment of State Police as a generational reform capable of fundamentally reshaping Nigeria’s security architecture.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, commended the President for reaffirming his administration’s resolve to decentralise policing during a recent high-level engagement with state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the statement, President Tinubu emphasised that the creation of State Police has become imperative in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, noting that decentralised law enforcement would strengthen community-based policing, improve intelligence gathering, and enhance internal security nationwide.
The Kogi State Government noted that the President’s position aligns with ongoing deliberations by the National Assembly on the constitutional and legislative frameworks required for the establishment of State Police, describing the move as bold, strategic, and timely.
Fanwo said the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo fully supports the President’s vision and remains committed to reforms that bring security closer to the grassroots.
He described the State Police initiative as a decisive intervention with the potential to significantly curb insecurity across the country, adding that the proposed decentralisation of policing naturally complements the Federal Government’s broader economic, institutional, and financial reforms.
“As a government, we fully align with Mr President’s position and assure him, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly, of our readiness to cooperate with all relevant authorities to make State Police a reality,” the statement said.
The Kogi State Government further stressed that sustained collaboration between federal and state authorities would not only address immediate security threats but also lay a solid foundation for lasting peace, stability, and socio-economic development across Nigeria.
