The media office of Senator Isah Jibrin Echocho, who represents Kogi East Senatorial District, has dismissed claims that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is influencing political developments in the district ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Mikail Ibrahim, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Senator Echocho, the office responded to reports alleging attempts to promote the senator’s political ambitions against an alleged zoning arrangement in the district.
According to the statement, there is no formally established zoning formula governing the Kogi East Senatorial seat.
The media office argued that political support in the district has historically been shaped by factors such as popularity, performance and acceptance among constituents.
The statement cited endorsements and support from political stakeholders across different parts of the district as indications of Senator Jibrin’s appeal beyond his immediate constituency.
“The assertion that there is an established zoning arrangement in Kogi East is untrue. Support for Senator Echocho from leaders and stakeholders across the district reflects confidence in his leadership and representation,” he said.
The media office also stated that some constituents in Dekina Federal Constituency have expressed support for Senator Echocho to seek another term, citing his legislative record and representation in the National Assembly.
Addressing references to Senate President Akpabio in the reports, Ibrahim said there was no evidence of external interference in the political affairs of Kogi East and urged political actors to focus on issues affecting the people.
“The people of Kogi East are capable of making their own political decisions, and discussions about the district’s future should remain focused on issues and democratic participation,” the statement said.
The media office further called on stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to promote unity and engage constructively as political activities ahead of the next election cycle continue.
