In a powerful demonstration of how sport and intellect can unite communities and inspire futures, the Hope Omeiza Foundation hosted its first-ever Chess Tournament on June 8th, 2025, at the scenic rooftop of Inya Amina Hotels and Apartments, Okene, Kogi State.
With the theme “Checkmate for Peace”, the event brought together passionate young players, educators, and peace advocates in a shared celebration of strategy, intelligence, and personal development. It was an evening filled with excitement, critical thinking, and powerful stories.
Among the highlights of the tournament was the crowning of several talented winners who displayed incredible skill and poise. However, it was one particular teenager who stood out, not only for his exceptional command of the chessboard but for the humility and promise he carried.
Recognizing this, a magnanimous philanthropist flexed his altruistic muscles in awarding him a fully funded scholarship, marking a life-changing moment in his academic journey.
“At the heart of this event is our belief in young people, in their dreams, their intellect, and their ability to shape a more peaceful society,” said Dr. Hope Omeiza, President of the Foundation.
The tournament featured tightly contested rounds, with participants demonstrating not only technical skill but remarkable sportsmanship. The competition underscored the power of chess to develop critical thinking, patience, and strategic foresight, values that extend far beyond the game itself.
The event was made possible through the support of committed partners and collaborators, their collective effort helped transform the vision into a truly impactful reality.
The Technical Adviser to the Governor of Kogi State, Dr. Ozomata Abdullahi while commending the organizer said, “this is a clinical reconstruction and should be encouraged.
He added that the game of chess helps young minds to improve cognitively and think more strategically.
He expressed hopes that the next event would be bigger, with the presence of nationally and internationally recognized players to inspire the youths of Kogi state.
In addition to the scholarship, over ₦100,000 in cash prizes and other gifts were awarded to top players, further motivating excellence and participation among youth.
The Kogi State project coordinator for Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi Abbas, who also graced the event, stated his profuse excitement at this noble and first of it’s kind event in the whole of Kogi in general. Dr. Abbas said, “I am looking forward to the next competition and how we can collaborate to make it bigger”
As the evening came to a close, it was clear that the tournament had achieved far more than checkmates and trophies, it had ignited hope, fostered community, and inspired futures.
The Hope Omeiza Foundation remains committed to nurturing young minds through education, mentorship, and community-centered events. With the success of Chess Tournament 1.0, preparations are already underway for the next edition, promising even more opportunities for growth, recognition, and transformation.
