Kogi

Heavy rainstorm has destroyed a whole office block of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Headquarters and affected other environs in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The storm, which occurred between 8.30 p.m. and 930 p.m., also damaged a 33KVA transformer, thereby burning off five fuel pumping machines of A.A. Kano filling station opposite Kogi Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.

AGM, corporate Affairs of NIWA, Mr Suleiman Makama, who confirmed the incident, said that the storm pulled off the roof housing the engineering, Survey, Special duties, Project management, Area office coordination departments.

He described the incident as devastating and unfortunate considering the destruction to sensitive equipment and other facilities of the various departments.

“One other serious challenge is the affected staff of those departments, who have been displaced and not able to work for the moment,” he said.

The affected A.A. Rano filling station had to close down following the devastating effect of the rainstorm, which left only one pumping machine standing un-burnt.
