81 Year-old Museveni Cleared to Run for Uganda 2026 Polls

Uganda’s Electoral Commission has officially confirmed the incumbent President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni to run in the January 2026 presidential election.

The Electoral Commission made the announcement on Tuesday, near the capital, Kampala.

The 81 year-old President is gunning to extend his 40-year rule. He addressed a crowd of supporters after the nomination process, promising to improve the country’s economy.

His main challenger, former musician Bobi Wine, is expected to get nominated on Wednesday as the candidate of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). The NUP has called on its supporters to “come out in large numbers.”

President Museveni has said this would be his last run for the presidency, a promise critics say he has made before.

The Electoral Commission also cleared Robert Kyagulanyi, 43, popularly known as Bobi Wine as the candidate of the National Unity Party.

Museveni defeated Wine in 2021 by a wide margin, though Wine said his victory was stolen through ballot stuffing, intimidation by security forces and other irregularities.
