The Nigerian Red Cross Society has distributed dignity kits to 110 selected Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and vulnerable women in Kogi State.

The distribution took place at the Disability Commission Secretariat in Lokoja and in Kotonkarfe community, within the Kogi Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Secretary of the Red Cross in Kogi, Abdullahi Abubakar, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups across Nigeria.

“We are here today to show our love and support to persons with disabilities,” he said. “This initiative is not limited to Kogi State — it is also ongoing in five other states, including Benue and Nasarawa.”

The dignity kits, primarily intended for young women of reproductive age, contain essential hygiene items such as bathing and washing soap, detergent, toothbrush, toothpaste, slippers, body cream (Vaseline), underwear, and sanitary pads.

“These are called dignity kits because they are tailored to help preserve the dignity of young women,” Abubakar noted. “PWDs are often overlooked in humanitarian efforts. With this outreach, we want to reassure them that they are seen, valued, and included in Red Cross activities.”

He explained that the Red Cross collaborated with the Kogi State Disability Commission to identify eligible beneficiaries, focusing on PWDs, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Abubakar added that while this distribution is a pilot program covering Lokoja and Kogi LGA, the Red Cross aims to extend the initiative to all 21 local government areas in the state.

“PWDs are among the most vulnerable in society,” he said. “They deserve care, protection, and inclusion — just like everyone else.”
