Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi, on Friday, called for calm and understanding among stakeholders in Okobo-Enjema Community in Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The community got embroiled in a crisis with a mining company in the area, Eta-Zuma Group (W\/A) Limited.<\/p>\n
The disagreement attracted the attention of the state government.<\/p>\n
The community had accused the coal-mining company of obstructing legally recognised artisan miners from their activities.<\/p>\n
The development prompted the state government to order the company to temporarily cease mining activities.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued in Lokoja by his media aide, Onogwu Mohammed, and made available to newsmen, the governor called for peace between the community and the company.<\/p>\n
He said that his administration was working out a lasting solution to minimise dispute in the area \u201cfor the benefit of all the stakeholders\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is need for residents of Okobo-Enjema to maintain peace and tranquility amidst the ongoing dispute with the mining company.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy administration is very much committed to finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the disagreement between mining corporations and host communities in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is because it is the fundamental responsibility of the government to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its citizenry,\u201d Mr Bello said.<\/p>\n
He further expressed the determination of his administration to create a secure and conducive environment for both the residents and investors.<\/p>\n
According to him, the state government will safeguard investments in the state and uphold the rights and privileges of host communities.<\/p>\n
The governor said that there would be enduring peace when companies adhere to agreements with relevant agencies and host communities and also fulfill their corporate social responsibilities.<\/p>\n
He commended the people of the community for their non-violent approach in addressing the issue.<\/p>\n
The statement added that the governor ordered the company to resume operation at its site while the resolution process continued.<\/p>\n
