{"id":5049,"date":"2022-11-07T20:04:11","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T19:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ebirareporters.com\/?p=5049"},"modified":"2022-11-07T20:04:11","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T19:04:11","slug":"ful-students-beg-asuu-to-hold-on-till-after-exams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ebirareporters.com\/ful-students-beg-asuu-to-hold-on-till-after-exams\/","title":{"rendered":"FUL Students Beg ASUU to Hold on Till after Exams\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students of <a href=\"https:\/\/ebirareporters.com\/2022\/10\/17\/asuu-federal-university-lokoja-announces-resumption-date\/\">Federal University Lokoja<\/a> (FUL) on Monday pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) not to resume its strike until after their (varsity\u2019s) second semester exams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The students\u2019plea came on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/ebirareporters.com\/2022\/10\/14\/asuu-suspends-strike\/\">ASUU\u2019s<\/a> Congress meeting on Monday deliberating on Federal Government\u2019s alleged failure to pay its members\u2019 salaries after resuming work on Oct. 14 from its 8 months strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A cross section of the students, who made the plea while speaking with NAN in Lokoja, said it would be disastrous if their exams scheduled to commence on Nov 14 would not hold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miss Joy Abuh, a Political Science student, said her prayer was that Monday\u2019s ASUU congress would not end up with resumption of the suspended strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have just settled down after the strike suspension and seriously preparing for our second semester exams starting next Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt will be disastrous for us in FUL if the exams will not hold as scheduled, considering the eight months we have wasted at home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy fervent prayer is that the union will not declare any strike at the end of their meeting today in Abuja,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another student, Adeiza Ibrahim, with Department of Education, lamented the effects of any further strike on the Nigerian students and called for a rethink from ASUU to allow academic activities continue while they settled their differences with the government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI think much damage has been done to the nation\u2019s education system and there should be due consideration for a turn of new leaf because we\u2019re talking about the our future, the youths of this country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf at the end, we won\u2019t be allowed to write this semester exams, then it will be so terrible and devastating, \u201d Ibrahim asserted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apeyemi Abubakar, a 100 Level student of Chemistry Education said, \u201call we are begging for is for ASUU to allow us write this examination without any hindrance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have stayed home longer than necessary and now that we are back in campus, the Federal Government and ASUU should not allow anything to tamper with our educational pursuits anymore, \u201d she begged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Dr Joshua Silas, FUL ASUU Chairman, said, \u201cwe have no power of our own as a chapter to disobey our national body if it asks us to resume strike today, Nov 7.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs I speak with you, I am already in Abuja for ASUU\u2019s Congress meeting holding today. Everything will rest on the outcome of the congress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said if eventually they resumed the strike after today\u2019s congress, \u201cI will indeed sympathise with our students, whose time table for the second semester exams is out and commencing Monday, Nov 14 with all things being equal,\u201d Silas said.
