In recent years, the genre has gained a foothold in Western pop culture, and the Grammys are taking notice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to reporters in Ghana over the weekend, Mason said he had been meeting with players in the genre to explore the possibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe called in producers, songwriters, artists, executives and we had a virtual listening session where we heard from Afrobeats creators,\u201d he said at a September 24 news conference. \u201c[We] just talked about, \u2018What are the different subgenres? What are the needs? What are the desires?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How Afrobeats has become an unstoppable musical force<br \/>\nIt would likely take a while for such a change to be made, though. Throughout the year, the Recording Academy \u2013 the group of music industry professionals that presents the Grammy Awards \u2013 accepts proposals for new categories from its members. Those proposals are then reviewed by a committee and voted on by the Recording Academy Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, at an April 2021 meeting, the Recording Academy approved the addition of two new categories in the global and Latin music fields, but the change didn\u2019t take effect the 2022 Grammys. This year, the Recording Academy announced five additional categories, including songwriter of the year and best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media, which will take effect at the 2023 Grammys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy goal is to make sure that we represent all genres of music, including Afrobeats, at the Grammys. But it has to be done properly,\u201d Mason said during the news conference. \u201cI think the listening session last week was very important, very valuable, and a step towards that path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Afrobeats artists have crossed over into mainstream pop through collaborations with Beyonc\u00e9, Drake, Ed Sheeran and other stars. But they\u2019ve also achieved mainstream success on their own. Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems have each notched Grammy nominations (though they\u2019ve typically been relegated to the global music field), while Burna Boy garnered a win in 2021 for his album \u201cTwice as Tall.\u201d CKay\u2019s \u201cLove Nwantiti\u201d dominated on TikTok last year before eventually showing up on the Billboard charts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UK\u2019s Official Charts Company launched an Afrobeats singles chart in 2020, while Billboard debuted a US-based Afrobeats chart this year, further nodding to the genre\u2019s growth outside of Africa and the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8080026755787218\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8080026755787218\" data-ad-slot=\"7193833156\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#8230;it will take a while though &#8211; CEO &nbsp; The Chief Executive Officer of Recording Academy, Harvey Mason&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[905,904],"class_list":{"0":"post-4546","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-entertainment","7":"tag-afrobeats","8":"tag-the-grammys"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
